Something to do with you on Saturday

    After Guo Changli left for practice in the massage hospital, we had fewer chances to meet each other. But my feeling toward him started to appear with delicate variation. I usually took him as an elder brother in the past, but now it seemed to have changed. He could not have time to relieve my aching neck anymore. So I had to spend money to have the aching relieved in a hospital. He introduced me to see his master who was a well-known expert on the  cervico-vertebrate disease countrywide. After curing me for a period, I had to wait for quite a while to get his treatment each time because the expert was too busy. I was also busy in study. So the doctor taught Guo how to cure my aching. Proceeding with the ease of my symptom and our meeting time and again, my relation towards him heated up. I implied my affection to him several times, yet he seemed to be unconcerned. That made me to wonder, 'Wasn't he really aware of affection? That's impossible. If so why has he kept in intimate touch with another girl?'

    With the growth of our age, those boys loving me launched their steaming chase after me. Each of them had better backgrounds than Guo. Most of them were handsome and their families were wealthy. They frequently invited me to go out to have a good time with them. In addition they tried in all possible ways to make me happy. But I did not have any intimate feeling with them. I just took them as good friends. While my feeling towards Guo was much more intimate, he always avoided my talks that seemed connected with affection. 'Does he have no love for me? Or was he still in love with his former girl friend Song Xiaomei?' However I was confident and did not believe I might be in vain to win a boy friend with my fair face and qualifications. For many times I had shown my love to him. But he just kept an attitude of nonchalance. At that time I had never heard of a case in which a girl approached a boy with initiative. Thus I was trapped in a dilemma. 'Since I was not a girl with no man to marry, why should the initiative be taken from my side? If the relation was realized, could I be despised through my whole life? Not to say there were  several boys chasing me.' After careful consideration, I reached the conclusion that who showed the intention at first was not important. 'Why is it necessary for the male to show the affection to the female? Now the saying goes as the man and women are equal.' For the sake of a happy fortune, I decided to take the initiative.

    So I went to tell Guo that I had something to do with him on Saturday. Then I started to hope for the arrival of that day. But I hesitated and did not know how to start the talk. 'What a difficult situation had I met!' I thought. But I was confident and figured I might succeed in my love. Backed with my advantageous background, I should not meet his refusal. Guo came on Saturday evening. I did not know how to express at first. After talking for a while, I made up my mind and told him, "Guo Changli, I want to tell you that I want to be your girl friend." He hesitated for a moment and then said, "I know you are a lovely girl. But I cannot accept your love." I was surprised at hearing his words. But he continued, "My family is in the rural area. Therefore I might not be able to get a job after graduation. My family is poor. You should have heard about that. My father died when I was thirteen years old. I had to depend on my sisters' support to study at school. My family is still poor right now and living in the remote county of Miyun. I can not let you live there and can not afford to buy a house in the city proper of Beijing. I like you very much. But the fate refuses us to live together." Hearing his words, I was once again filled with courage and said, "Money! We can earn it together. If we get married, then you can get your registered residential certificate of Beijing Proper. With that matter settled, I believe you can get a job. I promise to bring you fortune if you marry me. Although, in the movies, the promise for fortune are usually made by boys to girls. I do not know why I am making my promise to you now." Guo said, "It is too early for you to make any conclusion. How about going with me to see my home. Would you dare to go?" I said, "There is nothing to fear."
